Sunlight

In the big picture everything around us (buildings, furniture, trees, grass, food… everything) was built with energy from the Sun. The gas in our cars is just a battery charged by energy from the Sun a very long time ago. Somehow in our culture we came to be afraid of sunlight. Everybody is putting tons of sunscreen every time they walk outside. It is like the Sun is out there to kill us. We got to the point where many people are low in vitamin D because they do not go outside long enough to make vitamin D in their bodies. Measure your vitamin D levels and if they are low you need more sunlight.

Researchers with some common sense actually put together research that shows that sunlight is actually good for us. Watch this lecture by Richard Weller: youtube link. Sunlight increases the risk of melonoma and some other skin cancers but the slight increase in mortality is dwarfed by the increase in health and lifespan due to the beneficial effects of sunlight. Overall, there is a great benefit from sunlight exposure, just do it slowly and do not get sunburns. Roger Seheult is an ICU doctor who is very passionate about sunlight and he tells this very inspiring story: youtube link.

Another issue with our modern lifestyle is that the modern windows and the modern LED lights deprive us of the natural infrared light. Everything around us is geared for energy efficiency, but the industry and governments are ignorant about the health side effects.

An even bigger story at the cosmic level is provided by Robert Fosbury in this lecture. His conclusion is that life itself is starlight, stardust and the cold of outer space.
